Modern diffusion of essential oils has typically fallen into three categories: Evaporative, Heating, and Ultrasonic/Humidifying.

• Evaporation Diffusion: works by soaking absorbent materials such as pads or natural woods with your essential oil and simply allowing the natural movement of air to disperse the fragrance. As you can imagine, this tends to waste a lot of essential oil and more often than not, results in a sticky mess.
• Heat Diffusion: works by warming a pool of essential oil either by placing a candle beneath the receptacle or by plugging a diffuser into the wall. But heat can change the chemical composition of an essential oil, therefore changing the benefits you may get from inhaling its scent. And you’re left with another sticky mess.
• Ultrasonic Diffusion: also called Humidifying Diffusion, this works by dropping your essential oils into water and using ultrasonic vibration to create a water-essential oil mist that is dispersed into the air.
